Philadelphia's Please Touch Museum is not a museum explicitly about haptics, but a "hands-on" learning environment for kids aged 2-7. However, the name speaks to the importance of touch in our childhood development. For example, the pioneering Swiss psychologist Jean Piaget discussed four stages in childhood cognitive development, proceeding from sensorimotor, to fine haptic skills, and higher cognitive skills. The museum design echoes this progression. It is a fantastic environment designed to engage children. I'm sure many adults will find it as interesting as we do.
In the long term, we aim to conduct research together with the museum about how to effectively engage young people in learning through the sense of touch. Hopefully this will involve many more on-site visits. Thanks, Please Touch Museum!
